Tyre Safety Tips

Good tyres are essential for safe driving – they affect steering, braking and acceleration. When was the last time you checked your tyres?

Check your tread depths regularly

The tyre needs to be replaced when the tread surface is level with the tread-wear indicators (usually six small ribs across the bottom of the main tread grooves). Don't forget to check the spare tyre too.

Check your tyre pressure regularly

Consult your owner's handbook or nearest Kwik Fit centre for the recommended pressures for your vehicle and check pressure at least every two weeks, when the tyres are cold.

Always have tyres inflated to the correct pressure and get the front wheels realigned if you strike the kerb or a pothole.

When buying retread tyres

Check they are marked British Standard AU144e, which proves they have been thoroughly tested and meet the same performance standards as new tyres. Only buy second-hand tyres if they are marked 'part-worn' next to the E or BS mark – this shows they have been checked for faults.

When driving in icy conditions

Use the highest gear possible to avoid wheel spin.To brake without locking your wheels, get into a low gear earlier than normal, allow speed to drop and use the brake pedal gently.

Don't break the law!

Remember, it's illegal to have:

  • car tyres with tread worn to below 1.6mm
  • a mix of radial and cross-ply tyres
  • over or under inflated tyres
  • tyres with cuts, lumps, bulges or tears
  • the wrong sort of tyre fitted to a vehicle or trailer

When buying new tyres, make sure they meet European standards for load and speed performance – indicated by an 'E' or 'e' mark on the sidewall.
